I love the first of the year because it means I'm off to conventions. My favorite is organized by Professional Photographer's of America and it's simply called "Imaging". PPA is the biggest and oldest photographer's association around. Though I really do need to have a serious discussion with them about not planning it on the same day as the playoff games. lol

Traveling on Game Day

It is so much to meet new people in the industry then every year looking forward to seeing them again. I have made friends from Australia, Canada, London, Houston, and Chicago to name a few. Hmmm, I wonder if that means I can crash at their house when we travel. They are invited to crash with us! :)

The trade shows are always fun and interesting as well. Where else can you learn the newest and greatest? A couple years ago it was metal prints, this year wall clings. I wonder what will be big next year?

PPA keeps it exciting by moving the convention to a new city every year. Last year it was held in San Antonio, this year New Orleans. I must admit, New Orleans has been the most fun. What a great city with a great "vibe"! If you have not visited, put it on your bucket list. Of course we visited Bourbon Street, but I had more fun on Frenchman Street. A quieter, less traveled section that contains about a dozen little jazz clubs. The highlight on Bourbon Street was running into an old high school friend. What are the odds?

It is jam packed with activities from 7 am till 11 pm. Classes, trade show, after dinner events, and play time. No trip to New Orleans would be complete without eating at Cafe De Monde and cruising the French Quarter. I love the original art on Royal Street too.

Sarganis-Fritz's Christmas Cards 2011

I have a confession to make. I start thinking about my Christmas cards in the summer. I love photographing my family and trying to come up with something fun and unique each year. Well, we recently purchased two puppies for my daughter for Christmas and they are so sweet and adorable.

So... now we have four dogs and two cats. Yes, I think we are crazy and I wanted to capture the fun and love in our home with all these wonderful animals. I love our doggies and cats. They are part of the family. I hope I succeeded.

Please, please, please if you are considering adding a dog or cat to your home please visit the animal shelters. They are in desperate need of adoption. We have gotten all of our animals from the shelters and have always had the best luck. I think they can tell that you rescued them and are so grateful to be part of your family.

Dando Amor - Ecuador Orphanage

Dando Amor is a non profit organization started by two generous photographers, Lori Nordstrom and Travis Gugelman. If I may copy directly from their website:

We are a group of professional photographers inspired to give back by digging deep and really getting involved with helping others. Photographers Travis Gugelman and Lori Nordstrom started Dando Amor for a way to allow other photographers to be personally involved in helping children live better, fuller lives.

Dando Amor = Giving Love.

We have chosen the orphanages in Ecuador as our first place to reach out. The children in Ecuador will both fill and break your hearts! Most of the kids there will never be adopted…they have to be orphaned for 3-4 years before they are adoptable, which means that most will live their lives in the orphanage. One of our friends has described what we’re doing : “There is an age-old question about the tree falling in the forest when no one is there… does it still make a sound as it falls? It’s the same in regards to these children: If a child is lovable, has a heart that is aching for attention – is he not lovable because there is no one there to love him?” We’ve considered this and said YES. That child is lovable and should be shown love.

Our hope is to give these children a better life there as well as to equip them with the tools needed to become confident and capable adults. We’ve been told that speaking English and having computer skills will increase their chances of survival once they leave the orphanages, so we began with that in mind in the fall of 2010. Our team was able to fix a roof in the computer room in one of the all-girls homes as well as hiring an English tutor for a full year.

How lucky am I that I had the opportunity to photograph a niner game? It is so much fun and I was in heaven the entire time. Now, it's not because I am a great sports photographer and they were begging me to come photograph the game, though I'm not too bad. lol
It's because my best bud arranged for me to get a pass on the field to the game. Thank you Terrell. You are the best!

I actually enjoy capturing the action on the sidelines more. I love to show the behind the scenes.

Red Velvet Tour

I was fortunate to attend "The Red Velvet Tour" presented by the talented Kay Eskridge and Graphic Authority. Kay spent all day demonstrating her lighting techniques and posing ideas with two models. The models were wonderful to work with. Now remember, you are in lingerie in front of 15 students and they all have a camera pointed at you. Yes, they were wonderful. And, yes these are published with their consent.

I love celebrating women's beauty, outer and more importantly inner beauty. I love to empower women by showing them how really beautiful they are. Everyone deserves to enjoy a pampered day with professional hair and make up and be photographed by a professional photographer.

Every single woman is beautiful in her own way and I like to highlight and emphasis their special features. Let's stop being so hard on ourselves. No one is perfect. So let's appreciate what God bestowed upon us and celebrate our own sexy.

Sexy may be your favorite pair of jeans with heels or a little black dress. Of course there is always lingerie. 8-)

I love Boudoir Photography. It is by far the most challenging type of portrait to capture well. Yet, it is the most rewarding to see that smile on her face and to hear, "Do I really look like that?" Yep... Celebrate our own sexy.

The Second Shooter!

Recently my BFF, Liddie, asked me to help her photograph a wedding. I have to admit I loved being the second shooter. I have complete freedom to shoot at will, like a stealth shooter. Sneaking in and out grabbing my shot and moving on to the next frame without interrupting the flow.

Here are a couple of my favorites.

I love it.

I was sent to capture a few fun images of the guys.... I'm starting to see a common theme here of cutting off my subjects heads. lol

This bridesmaid created all the beautiful flower arrangements and bouquets. She did such a fabulous job that I needed to capture an image of her holding all the bouquets. Now that's a great bridesmaid!

To all my fellow photog's... I'm available as a second shooter if you ever need the extra help. hint, hint! lol

Happy Birthday Conner!

Today is my baby's birthday. Of course you know he's not a baby, he's 19! Yes, all those cliché's are true. Where does the time go? Seems like only yesterday! etc. But, OMG How do I have two kids in college? I mean really? Where does the time go?

Enjoy your children, don't be anxious for them to grow up because it will happen soon enough all on its own. I thought it would be fun to go back and look at some of Conner's images over the years and I'm so grateful that I have them. Trying to find "good" images of me as a kid is difficult. There are some, but not a lot, and almost NONE of my hubby. So please.... capture images of your children so you can take your own stroll down memory lane. And, even more important let your children take that stroll too! And put a date on the image. You think you will remember, but you won't.

First Birthday!

Oh how I use to love to comb his hair like this. Grease it up and flip it over, I remember that is how my mom combed my brother's hair. So, It has to be right. Right?

First day of School - 5th Grade

I would bring my camera on the first day of school and photograph all the kids in both of my children's classes. That was so much fun. One of the teachers later told me that they use to fight over who would get my kids in their classes because they loved the photo's that I would give them each year. Glad to hear it was appreciated!

This is Conner's 11 Year Old Portrait. I would take their portrait every Birthday and Christmas. Actually, I still do! Though Conner is a little tricky to pin down and I've missed a few years. Look how much he has grown in one year! So Handsome.

We would love to get up early on Saturday morning and go watch him play sports. Boy, do I miss those days. I LOVE his dirty face after a game. He is 12.

Here is his hippy stage! lol He was 14 and loved his long hair and guitar. He is a natural on guitar! I have a confession, this is a reproduction with my cell phone. Not the original image. Like you couldn't tell? Look at that huge difference between 12 and 14!

Wow, jump to present day and he is a man. A handsome one at that. Happy Birthday Conner! We love you.

Meet Dr. Sherri Merideth & her boys!

I was very flattered when I received a Call from Margie Morris from Morris Ink Advertising Agency stating that she just viewed my website and would like to hire me to photograph the very charming Dr. Sherri Merideth for an ad campaign that she is designing. (boy, talk about a long sentence! lol)

Well, she was looking for portraits. I can do that! I was excited. It has been a while since I worked with an advertising agency. I feel like I hit jackpot with Margie. I have extremely enjoyed working with such a professional, well run agency. She responds to my emails within hours and with all the details the first time. No back and forth emails for days. lol

To say it's been a joy is an understatement.

My next pleasant experience was to meet Dr. Sherri Merideth and her two sweet, adorable boys. And, turns out she lives in my neighborhood. Small world, I knnooow!
They were looking to match the ad image for the other clinic's ad campaign which was taken in the park, well, that was easy. I suggested the park in our neighborhood.

I immediately fell in love with her boys. Her oldest son is so full of personality and charm. I want to steal him away and photograph him with a really cool theme and wardrobe. Still thinking about that one, but an old bomber jacket and plane come to mind. Oh, and a cool red scarf. Like Snoopy. lol

It is obvious that Dr. Merideth is a wonderful mother and I'm assuming that must transcend to a wonderful doctor. After all she is a young mother, someone that understands to be recently pregnant and the demands of motherhood.

Deb's Recipe a Day

For all those food lovers out there that enjoy cooking I have to share Deb's Recipe a Day blog with you! Her name is Deb Keith and she lives in Novato, Ca. We have know each other since our kids were in preschool together. Yes, our kids are in college now, so it has been a very long time.

What I love most is her recipes are simple but oh so tasty. My favorite part is how she will take a simple prepackage food but twists it around adds her creative flair for cooking and then it is an amazing dish and tastes like you spend hours cooking over that hot stove!

Here is an example:

Klock Kahlua Kake

This is an amazing cake recipe given to me by my friend Cynthia Klock (I did tweak it a little). We used it for a wine pairing for her winery. It is so delicious! xo

1 Box Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownie Mix, with chocolate pieces or comparable
8 Ounces Non Fat Greek Yogurt
3 Eggs
1/2 C Olive Oil
1/2 C Kahlua

Mix all ingredients until well blended. Place in a Bundt, loaf or cake pan. Bake at 350 for 40-50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean and cracked on top.

She gave me one to try and that was all I needed...Yes, I went to Costco yesterday and bought that huge box of Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownie Mix. Can't wait to bake it myself.

Bryan Adams!

As I'm listening to Bryan Adams on my computer while working in photoshop I hear that "ding" that I have mail! I think I jumped out of my seat when I read the notice that Bryan is performing at the Majestic in Dallas this October!!! Yep, I'm going.

Any other Bryan Adam fans out there? My hubby and I went to see his bare bones tour a couple of years ago at the Majestic and we both agreed that it was one of the best concerts we have attended in a long time. Just him, his guitar, his harmonica, and that wonderful raspy voice of his. Can't get much better than that!

I have to confess that I have an obsession with my music. I pick one artist and listen to them continuously. Bryan Adams is my number one choice. There was a time when I only listened, ok maybe 90% of the time to him. Then it was Lenny Kravitz, but that only lasted maybe 6-8 months. Next was Death Cab for Cutie. Then straight back to Bryan Adams. So yeah, I'm excited that he will be in town!

40 Days for Nada!

It was miserable suffering the forty 100 degree plus days in a row, but what made us carry on was the possibility of breaking the record set in 1980 with forty-two days. We were so close that we were cheering for another hot day, as crazy as that sounds. But, to fall short by two days was so disappointing, a let down. At least we would have had bragging rights. See how tough we are here in Dallas? We kicked all your butts with this heat wave!

So now that there is no reason to continue this extreme heat... bring on the eighty degree weather! We are so ready for a break. Please!

Things they are a Changing!

I feel like I am on a roll. I have designed a new brand, a new look. With that entails:
- business cards
- a new and improved price list to reflect the changes in the economy
- return address labels
- new look to my blog... tell me you noticed?
- and now... wait for it... a new website!

I'm still working on it and it will take me several more weeks before it is up and running, but since you asked so nicely I will post the home page.

One Person Can Make a Difference! - Thirst Relief International

I had the privilege of hearing Jim Davis-Hicks speak at my local photographer's guild meeting. This was about a month ago and it is still "with me": his impact, his drive, and his courage to under take such a huge project. I don't ever want to hear anyone ever again say one person can't make a difference, or I can't. Because you can, he did!

He is a very spiritual man and he shared his dream about water and that he was supposed to do something with water, that God was talking to him. He started researching it and discovered the horrific water conditions in third world countries. Can you imagine not having clean safe drinking water.... ever? Well, 1.1 BILLION people don't have access to clean water. He created Thirst Relief International and has impacted 197,087 lives so far!

Jim, consulted with engineers and they have come up with a bio sand filter: Dirty water goes in and clean drinking water comes out! For only a $5 donation a person can have clean water for twenty five years. I find that amazing - only $5! So, give up a latte and save a life!

There are three ways for you to help:
1 - Buy a tee shirt August 1st-8th at http://sevenly.org/ and $7 is directly donated to Thirst Relief!
2 - Sign up on their website to make a one time donation or set up regular monthly donations. http://thirstrelief.org/

Crap Chronicles

I know what you are thinking.... Why am I posting this on by blog? Well, my neighbor and friend, Diana Estill, who is a writer has asked me to design the graphic work and layout on all of her latest book covers and this just happens to be her latest, titled Crap Chronicles. And, yes this time it is exactly what you are thinking: funny, horrible stories of her family with IBS.

She sent us an advance copy and I was in my office working and I could hear my hubby laughing his head off while reading this at the kitchen table. He also kept making an OHHHHHHH sound with a huge chuckle. I have read it too and it is quite funny.

Am I still a Californian or a Texan? Part Three

I thought today was a perfect day to finish my Cali vs. Texas blog. Seven years ago today we made the big move to Texas, said good bye to Cali forever. Ha, you know what they say about forever? Or is it never? lol One day we just might move back but for now we are staying put and enjoying Texas. Well, most of the time. It is bloody hot and flat here. Oh come on, it's not like you don't know how hot and flat it is here?

In my previous blogs I've ranted, yes, I do believe I did rant a little about all the wonderful things regarding Cali. Mostly the food, my beloved sports teams, and missing my friends and family. And, I didn't even mention the gorgeous weather, the winery's, beautiful scenery with the mountains and the ocean, and all the fun things to explore. Oops, I think this blog is suppose to be talking up all the wonderful things about Texas and I'm still singing Cali's praise. Sorry, old habit, I have lived there a lot longer. Which brings up this story: One of my chiropractor's assistants said to my BF, Liddie, last week that, "Karyn's all California". Not sure what that means exactly, but funny that he mentioned it after 7 years. I thought I was slowly converting...

Ok, back on track now... What I love about Texas is the people. I've always heard about the Southern Hospitality but have never experienced it until I moved here. I know technically Texas is considered a Gulf State, but it feels more Southern to me. I love how social Texas is, I love how perfect strangers can become best friends standing in line at the grocery store, and I love that y'all want to have a "get together" every weekend. ( Did you notice how I threw in that little "y'all"?)

Texas has changed me for the better. The culture has allowed me to become more friendly, less shy, and dare I say more fun. I remember house hunting with our realtor and as we were driving around the neighborhoods people were waving at us. I thought wow our realtor is well known in the community. I finally asked her how she knew all these people. She laughed and told me she didn't know them, that it's just what you do in Texas to your neighbors. Wow, we aren't that friendly in Cali and it's what makes Texas so special. It makes up for the heat which you do become acclimated to. 100 degrees just doesn't feel as hot as it did our first two summers here. So yes, I do believe I might be turning into a Texan. Is that the gauge of how Texan you are? If you don't melt in the heat and you own a pair of cowboy boots? I did buy my first pair last year! lol

Texas certainly takes pride in their state, which I admire. The Texas Star is proudly displayed everywhere, and I do mean everywhere... I haven't made the jump to actually buy one, but you never know, ask me in another five years and I might have one displayed somewhere in my home. lol

I also love the shopping. Cali has nothing on Texas compared to great shopping. I do admit it is one of my favorite past times. Y'all have more malls than I have ever seen. (Ha ha, did you notice the "y'all" again?)

Meet Gary Head!

Gary asked me to photograph his Corporate Headshot with Morgan Stanley. Mind you I've known Gary since we moved to Texas 7 years ago. It's actually a funny story on how we met. We were only in Texas two days and I was at Williams High School signing up my daughter for school. His wife, Susan, overheard me telling the counselor we just moved into town and she asked me where from. We started talking and the more we talked, the more we found we had in common. We both moved to Texas from out of state within the last week, we were both moving to Murphy, both building in the same subdivision, and both living in the same corporate housing while we were waiting for our houses to be built. It was just meant to be. We have been best friends ever since. I love that about Texas! You all have that southern hospitality thing down. :)

I'm very excited about his adventure with Morgan Stanley. We trust Gary with our financial future and I must say he has been the best financial planner we have ever tried.

He actually keeps an eye on our investments and emails us regularly when we need to sell, buy, or move it. He also sends us a "link" that he knows would be of interest to us. Thanks Gary, we appreciate it.

My Gift to the active Military!

Yesterday's post about my dad is still sitting with me. There isn't a day I don't think about my dad and how much I miss him. How he provided for his family of 6, taught me to ride a bike, and took me and my three brothers to all the James Bond and John Wayne movies.

He was so very talented in many areas. He was a wonderful painter, fabulous cook, reupholster, leather craftsman (I still have a purse he tooled with a beautiful design and then sewn together), and a mechanic who could fix anything. Plus, his years of service to our country, with his rough conditions to serve could not have been easy. After all, he was just a young man who grew into a wonderful family man. An everyday man that we cherish who did the right thing.

Well, I started digging around looking for the other image I knew I had of my father when he served. This is just too good not to share. Wasn't my dad handsome?

This started me thinking about all those other young men and women serving their country who are missing their families and perhaps without a family portrait to cherish. I can't help but put the two items together. After all, I am missing my dad, thinking about our freedom and how much I enjoy my family portraits. I know it's not easy to afford professional photography on a military income. This is where I can help. God has blessed me with such a wonderful gift to capture moments in time to be remembered forever. Corny I know, but it's true and how I feel. I look back on images that I have taken of my kids when they were young and it still melts my heart. Or the great images I have of my parents when they were in high school, their wedding images, and even the photographs my mom had taken of all of us as kids.

Our military gives us so much, so now I would like to give to them. All active military personnel will receive a 50% discount on the creation fee and 25% discount on all images. I want you all to have and cherish what I have.

Happy Fourth of July & Thank you for your Service

With the Fourth of July upon us you can't help but think of how we achieved our freedom and what we are celebrating. Growing up I heard stories of my dad in World War II. War is not pretty, glamourous, or a welcome option, but sometimes a necessity. Oddly, it was my mom who would tell us stories of what he went thru in the navy as a "fueler". He was aboard a smaller ship and they would travel to the full size ships to refuel them. He never liked to talk about it, even 30 years later.

One story my mom told was when they were on rations for weeks and eventually ran out of food. Some of the sailors lost 50-60 pounds. Can you imagine trying to stay alert and active on no food. War is tough.

My mom also told the story of how my dad helped save the entire ship by acting quickly and gunning down a Kamikaze pilot before he could reach their ship. No wonder he never liked to talk about it. I would imagine that stays with you for a long time.

This is my favorite picture of my dad taken in 1945. He was proud to serve his country and marched down to the Navy office and signed up when he was only 19 years old.

Thank you to all of our military past and present! Your sacrifices make and continue to make this country what it is today. We know it's not an easy life and we pray for your safe return.

As a photographer I realize how priceless family images are, something to be passed down from generation to generation. Look at me with this beautiful photo of my dad taken in 1945 that I proudly display on my bookcase. I cherish it more than I can say. I'm teary eyed as I type this because I am missing my dad terribly who passed away in 1993. Thank you dad, I love you.

It's a new me!

They say you are to update your "Brand" often. We'll I admit it. I'm past due. My last logo design and update was about 3-4 years ago. I have been dabbling for the last couple of months trying to design something new that would scream ksf photography & design.

It's not just the logo and business card that need updating, but the complete "Brand." (I laugh a little inside my head when I say "Brand", it is such a buzz word right now.) So, I have also been researching packaging as well. I didn't want to make one big move without matching the accessories. You know, your shoes must match your purse kind of thing.

This week I made a trip to Gift Box and found my brown and teal colors so now I felt confident to go ahead and design with those colors in mind. Those are my favorite combination right now. I think the combo is so elegant.

After about 5 drafts this is my favorite. I hope you like my new "Brand". lol

I know I still need to work on the color of the wording to make sure it is clearly visible. But, like I said this is draft 5. Stay turned for draft 6 and hopefully the final draft.

Southfork ChiroSport Care Center of Murphy

I love Chiropractors. I'm one of those organic health freaks and I love it when my Chiro suggests an alternative to regular western medicine and when they crack my back. I have seen close to a dozen different Chiros since I was 18 years old. Yes, I know that's a long time. lol

Dr. Shawn Lorenzen, DC in Rohnert Park, Ca and Dr. Joel Taatjes, DC in Petaluma were/are my favorite Cali Chiros. We would go to them for everything. And I do mean everything. My son hurt is leg in football practice when is was 12 and I took him to Dr. Taatjes. There was no long wait in the ER. He took x-rays, examined him, and at the next visit adjusted his leg back into place. I miss you both very much.

Just in case you didn't know Chiropractic care is more than just cracking your back. They have adjusted my knees, wrist, shoulder and even my jaw. I clench my teeth waaay tooo muuuch.

Fast forward seven years later to Texas and I have finally found my new Chiro in Murphy, Dr. Neil Dukes. Dr. Dukes and his staff are wonderful. Yesterday at my visit I spent an hour an half. That included Massage Therapy, Acupuncture, and "Tweaking" feet included. They truly take the time to explain in detail how the body works and how they are going to fix you up and send you on your way.

I am one happy camper finally finding a Chiro that I love in Texas. If you are looking for one, I highly recommend him. I was honored that he asked me to photograph his staff, so here they are in the flesh. Well, sorta and in B&W.

Wow it seems that all of my favorite teams have been winning the championships lately.

1 - The New Orleans Saints. Of course I would have preferred it to be the SF 49ers, but you can't have everything. Besides our time is coming... I know it, I can feel it.

2 - The San Francisco Giants. OMG, I still get goose bumps when I think about them winning The Series. Is a repeat asking for too much?

3 - Now The Dallas Mavericks. Really, I'm not a basketball fan. Well, not until our good friends Mike and Kristine took us to a game this season and it got me in the "spirit" of the game. Then with the Mav's being in The Finals and then to eventually win it. Wow, so dang cool!!!

I must admit it is kind of nice to be able to root for a Texas team and to be able to see all the games on TV. I was never a basketball fan while I lived in Cali so I never had an affiliation with the SF Warriors. I couldn't even tell you one member of the team so I don't feel like I'm cheating on my home team. lol

I love the camaraderie the whole town feels, even the energy in the air when your local team wins the Big One! I appreciate that the Mav's are first class too. They deserved to win.

Why is it that sports has such a major impact on us all. I love watching my favorite teams play, especially when they win. Really, it's just a game. But, man oh man, what a game it is!

2011 Vacation - Mexico

2011 Vacation - Mexico

Last week our family took a fabulous vacation to the Yucatan Peninsula of the Mexican Coast. We visited Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Riviera Maya. We stayed at two different beautiful resorts. When we left for our trip my whole goal was to plant my toes in the sand and enjoy the beach all day long. HA HA, I didn't get to do that once. I visited the beach, took photographs, but that was it. I guess that means a re-do.

We overplanned! Zip-lining, trip to the Telum Ruins, Jungle Boat ride, snokeling, swimming with the dolphins, trip to the Zoo (Xpu-HA), and a stroll to downtown Playa Del Carmen's 5th Avenue where we dined on the beach. It was all very fun and we are all glad we did it. But, now... I need a vacation from my vacation. lol

I captured about 400 images during the trip and editied it down to about 50 in the video. I was enchanted with the architecture, the ruins, and downtown. I love them!

Cool App Sat - Translator

With my upcoming vacation to Mexico I know I'm going to use this app a lot! It's called Translator. Every language that I can think of is included in this app. It's so darn simple too. Click on what language you want to start with, um duh, English and then click what language you want it to translate too and in this case Spanish. And Whala! It types it out for you.
Now if who are talking too can't read then we are in trouble! lol

I also read on some of the reviews that it helps them with their foreign language homework. Now that alone is worth the download if you are trying to learn a new language.

School Portraits in the Fall!

My mom would take all four of our pictures on the first day of school every year when we were in elementary school. I always thought what a fun idea. I am proud to say I have taken a photograph of my two kids on their first day of school for their entire school career. And, I'm still photographing them even though they are in college. What can I say, some habits are hard to break.

I've told that story to several of my clients and i n return they have asked if I would start taking their children's School Portraits. You speak, I listen. :)

Really, I am talking about Back to School Portraits in the fall when the kids aren't even out of school yet. lol But, I'm taking this as a sign... I just got asked again this morning.

So, I'm getting the word out now about my upcoming Back to School Specials. Mark it in your calendar. September 7th, 8th, and 9th. And if you would like a special package of your kids together I can do that too.

I'll send out more info as the time approaches. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm excited about this. Especially since my kiddo's are in College.

I remember how fun and dare I even say important comic books were to me and my three brothers growing up. My fav was Richie Rich. Quick, easy reading as a young kid and a great introduction to books. My brothers had hundreds. Couldn't tell you which ones, but I do remember the huge stack and us spending hours reading them together. Those are good memories. Maybe that's why I like this app so much.

Wildflower Festival

Calling all DFW Music Fans! The Wildflower festival starts today in Richardson. They are celebrating their 19th anniversary this year.

If you have never been, it is really is quite fun. They have big name bands, ie;, Jerry Lee Lewis, REO Speedwagon, Jack Ingram, Sister Hazel, and Whitesnake to name a few spread over five different stages playing all day long .

What I am most excited about is to hear, "A Hard Night's Day". They are a tribute band to the Beatles. I am a huge fans of the Beatles, so is my hubby. I can't wait!

But WAIT! There's more... Street performers, dancers, and The Calypso Tumblers perform throughout the festival. A video game tournament featuring Guitar Hero and Game Havens Call of Duty Zombies Tournament is offered if you into that. lol

How much would you pay attend now? But WAIT! There's even more... A big Kidz Korner with a Karaoke Stage, Petting Zoo, Rock Wall, Bounce Houses, Face Painting, Hula Hoop Loop (am I too old to do that?) Kidz Sand Pit. etc., etc.

If you have been following my blog, and I hope you have, you know that I love me some Giants Baseball and 49er Football. Being in Texas is not conducive to follow the Bay Area Sports, well my bff told me about this app called ESPN ScoreCenter.

The best part about this app is you pick you favorite teams that you would like to follow. AND, for any sport: football, baseball, soccer, basketball, ok you get the idea, and set up alerts to be sent to your phone via a text message. Standard text rates apply. Do I sound like the commercial? lol Or if you download it on your ipad it will send an alert to that as well. Yes, I have it set up on both. Like you had to ask.

I set up my baseball alerts for the start of the game, any score changes, and the final score. They also have a setting for every three innings. I'm keeping up to date on every game with just a simple text. Because you know I could let it take over my life if I watched every baseball game. I mean really, why do they have to play 6 days a week. That's exhausting to watch that many games let alone those poor players who have no spare time or family time during the season. I say 2-3 games a week is perfect. Who is with me? lol

Carissa Graduates

I want to share some of my favorite images that I recently took of Carissa when I flew home to Cali last month. We went to Hawk Hill, the beautiful Place of Fine Arts by the Marina, and ended the session on the Golden Gate Bridge. I LOVE photographing in San Francisco... so many wonderful, unique locations.

I have been photographing Carissa since she was in her mom's tummy and every year since. Because we have collaborated together for 18 years we work wonderfully together. I love that she never questions my posing ideas, she just jumps right in and does it. Thank you for that Carissa. You and your sister are a couple of my favorite subjects to photograph.

She has been dancing since she was three years old so we incorporated that into the session. It's such a big part of her life, how could we not?

I love this app - Nike Training.
It's your own personal trainer. They have four different "Goals" titled Get Lean, Get Toned, Get Strong, and Get Focused. Once you click on the "Goal" Nike then breaks it down into three groups: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.

It will keep track of your progress, and even has a reward system where you may work up the ladder to different categories.

The best part is they feature a photograph of the proper technique for each exercise and for how long you should perform it. And if that wasn't enough, all the exercises may be performed at home with no or light weights.

And the icing on the cake is you may save your favorite music to your exercise routines as well.

I use it at they gym for my workouts. I frequently run out of new exercises to try and this helps me vary my workout by giving me several options quickly and efficiently.

Am I still A Californian or a Texan? Part Two

Well, I've been home in Cali for five days now. I went to a Giants game where we lost - urggg - though I did get to see Tim Lincecum pitch. We had great seats on the third base line. Hee hee, this images was taken with my handy dandy iPhone. lol

Spent Easter with the extended family, which I loved. I haven't been able to celebrate a holiday with the family in 6 years. I really miss them. I miss the Greek cooking too.

And of course I have visited with a lot of my friend's. We went to some of my favorite restaurants and it just made me more homesick.

Tonight I am photographing my longest standing client. They have been with me since day one. I photographed Carissa when her mom was pregnant with her and now I'm photographing her high school senior portraits. Wow! I feel very special to be included in their lives and to celebrate and document their growth and maturity.

So, Yes I'm a Texan but I'm also still a Californian. I have discovered that being home. It didn't take but a day to feel like I never left. I love so many things about the west coast. But, I also love many things about Texas. That will be part three. lol

I'm so lucky to call both places home.

Did you know that Facebook has another app called "Facey"? What's cool about it is you can customize the background colors and fonts. It also looks more like the full web version.

My original Facebook app has not been able to update for sometime. It would update for 3-4 seconds giving me a sense a false hope only to convert right back to the old version. Not sure what's up with that? Well, with Facey I'm updated! Yeah!

Shakespeare in the Park

My daughter, Cate, recently played the "shrew" in "Taming of the Shrew". Of course I brought my camera and grabbed a few images from the play. I never get tired of watching the kids perform. They are a talented group.

What was unique about this production was they hit the highlighted scenes about 10 minutes each from 5 of Shakespeare's most popular plays. Okay, I have to admit it... it's been a long time since I've watched, read, or listened to Shakespeare and I really don't remember a lot of the scenes. Especially the parts where everyone is "beating" each other up.
I'm wondering if he took his aggressions out in his writing?
I'm just saying! lol

Cool App Sat - Hey Tell

The Hey Tell app is a voicemail text program. I know what you are thinking. I thought the same thing. When my BFF, Liddie, told me about this app the first I thing I said was, "Why? Wouldn't you just call?" lol

But, the answer to that is no! Sometimes you just need to leave a quick message. The more I use it the more I love it. It's most beneficial when I'm driving and we all know we aren't suppose to text and drive. The beauty of this app is you just hold down the record button, say what you need to say (yes, it's limited amount of time) and then release the button. You are not taking your eyes off the road except for a few seconds.

I told one of my very good clients about this and she told EVERYONE. She especially loves it for her young son who isn't the best speller and would get frustrated texting.

I'll admit it... I am an avid texter and sometimes I just feel lazy and don't want to press all those darn buttons...

Am I still A Californian or a Texan? Part One

I'm preparing to fly home next week to photograph my longest standing client (from day one) and notice I said "fly home". But then I started thinking about it and it sort of feels more like coming home for a visit. Can it be? Am I starting to become a Texan after almost 7 years? I never thought that would happen. I was born and reared in Cali. It's all I know. Though I did buy my first pair of cowboy last year and love them. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have done that still living in California.

I do know that some things will never change. I will always be a die-hard 49er Fan and a SF Giants Fan. I do remember when I told my mom that we were moving to Texas and the second thing she said to me was, "You are not going to become a Cowboy's fan, are you?" lol

The biggest difference for me is food. I'm a vegetarian for one thing and I like to eat very healthy. When we first moved here I kept thinking I'll never fit in. Being a vegetarian in Cali is easy. Not soooo muuuuch here in Texas. There is a long standing joke with all my friends that when it's my time to order at a restaurant they all start laughing and say, "Here we go again" because 90% of the time I have to order off the menu.

After being here for a couple of years my hubby and I took a trip to the Grand Canyon and when we sat down to order I started crying with happiness. There were at least 5 things on the menu I could order and eat without having to modify. :) I was ecstatic. Boy, do I wish Texas would join in on that. Come on now, I can't be the only vegetarian here in Texas?

Over time I have come to accept that's just the way it is going to be when I go out to dinner. So now I don't feel as much of an outcast as I use too. And, I have even come to like some of the Texas food. Come on now, who doesn't like Texas Toast?

Well, will see what happens when I fly home next week. Will it feel like I'm home or just visiting?

ps - hope my mom doesn't read this. She always says to me, "When are you going to stop this nonsense and move home?"

Apartment hunting... Already?

Tomorrow my daughter and I are driving to Denton to apartment hunting. Didn't she just get accepted to UNT last week? Really? We need to go apartment hunting now? What if I pretend to be sick tomorrow and don't go? Will she stay with us and live at home and commute? lol

Ok, that's how I feel on the inside, but I'm truly excited for her. It's a big step, part of growing up and moving on with your life. I know when the kids were little I couldn't wait for the next step. You know. I can't wait for them to sit up so I can put them down in the grocery cart without having to bring in the carrier. I can't wait for them to walk so I don't have to carry them all the time. I can't wait until they are potty trained... Ok, we all want that step. That's not a fair statement.

So please don't be impatient. Enjoy every moment because before you know it, they are in college and moving out of the house. If I'm this upset about her going off to college can you imagine what I'm going to be like when she gets married? That poor photographer is going to have a lot of retouching to do, I'll be crying most of the time. She will no longer be my baby, she will be a wife, and then a mom. Oh man, I'm getting ahead of myself... I'm doing it Again! Live in the moment and enjoy every minute of it.

I'm going to try something new. A blog posting every Saturday that is strictly dedicated to the cool apps I find and enjoy. Please share some of your favorite apps too.

My husband told me about this one and it's pretty good. It's called "Over 40". Mind you, I'm not admitting to being over 40. Wink, wink. And, I don't wear glasses... but I'm getting close to needing a pair. If the letters are small and the room is even semi dark, boy oh boy do the squinting eyes come out to play.

This app turns your camera phone into a magnifying glass and tada you instantly have glasses. lol

We've been talking about my daughter leaving for college for the last several years, but yesterday she got her confirmation that she has been accepted to UNT. It hit me like a ton of bricks. And, truth be told, I was crying all day yesterday. Yeah, yeah, I know it's the circle of life and progressive of things, but doesn't mean I have to like it!

My son came home and saw me crying and ran up to me to put his arms around me and ask me what was wrong. He thought someone died! When I told him how sad I was that Cate will be moving out, he had the nerve to a laugh at me. He doesn't understand, he's not a mom. Only a mom knows what I'm talking about. Okay, dads too.

When my daughter came home I just lost it and starting crying again and she pretty much laughed at me too and gave me a big hug. Then all night proceeded to rub it in with little quips like, "We need to start apartment hunting" and "We will have to start shopping for furniture too". Ha ha, not funny. Maybe in a few years it will be funny but not now.

We are extremely close, we talk, we hug, we laugh together everyday. I'm going to miss you my sweet girl. I've called her sweet girl her whole life and it is fitting. I'm one proud mama. She is kind, sensitive, mature, good natured, thoughtful, and just plain beautiful on the inside and out. Really? What do you expect? I'm her mom and I'm allowed to brag. :)

UNT is lucky to have her. Cate, you better call everyday and come home often. Just warning you now.

A real winner? Or just a little cheating?

My hubby and I were eating dinner with my son at Mooyah Burger - yum veggie burgers - and during dinner my phone beeped that it's now my turn on "Words with Friends". Being new to the game I'm still excited to hear that beep and to see what my opponent played.

This particular game I'm playing my good friend Susan and frankly she is kicking my butt. I mean really, how do you get 32 points out of "hole"? My regular play method is to literally make words up when I have no high scoring words available. One time I just started "farting" around while playing with the letter "Q" and tried QAT on a triple word square and it worked. I started laughing out loud and my hubby could hear me from the other end of the house. He asked me what was so funny and I yelled back, "you will see". Two minutes later I heard him scream, "Qat? What does that even mean?" I don't know what it meant, but it did work for 36 points. lol My point being I'm not the best at this... so back to dinner with my son...

I started complaining that I have no good letters and I need a high score to kick some butt back to Susan. Well, Conner, my son, pulled out his iphone and said what is your rack of letters? I told him and two seconds later he said try, blah blah blah. I never would of thought of that word but it was great and a high score.

Now of course my curiosity was up on how he came up with that word on his iphone no less. It took him a while to confess he cheats on Words with Friends and hasn't lost a game yet. Did you know there is a website dedicated to helping you to cheat? Is that fair? I can only hope that is how Susan is kicking my butt. lol And, if everyone is doing it, should I use that cheat website too? Do you agree ahead of time that you both will or will not use the site? Or do you keep quiet and assume everyone is cheating too?

At least I know that I don't have to cheat to beat my husband, which he is not taking well. Especially since he is a much better speller than me and he thought he would destroy me. But, he doesn't play around with words to see what he can make up either? Remember Qat?

Words with Friends

I know Words with Friends has been around for a while and I've heard all my friends talk about it... Well, I finally downloaded the free app and I'm having a blast. Even my 18 year old son, Conner, plays it with all of his friends. And yes, we have a continuous game too.

Mind you, I think I have played scramble 4 times in my entire life and thought it was boring. But, this is different, way more fun to get that beep that it's your move. lol Or maybe, because I'm older and can appreciate it now. Whatever the reasons I suggest you take a peek and give it a try. It really is fun!

I also downloaded it on my ipad which I prefer. Can't beat that big ole screen!

At the risk of oversharing... I wanted to tell my story at the Elizabeth Jekot Breast Imaging Center. I was more than happy with my experience and wanted to give her a shout out.

It's one of those doctor appointments that we all have to schedule and frankly, it's just not fun. And this appointment was for diagnostic which can be a scary experience. This was my first visit to her center and from the moment I walked into the building till the moment I left (almost 2 hours later) I was so impressed. The facilities, staff, and most importantly Dr. Jekot herself are first class.. The facilities are huge and the staff was professional and courteous.

Dr. Jekot was taking care of a patient before me and couldn't see me right away after the x-rays were taken. The technician, Stacy, came into the waiting room to give me an update explaining that the doctor was running behind but would be with me shortly. About 10 minutes later, Stacy ran into the waiting room to tell me everything looked good. They didn't want me to worry one moment longer than necessary. Wow. I've never had that experience before. And, yes, it was a relief to hear.

When I did see Dr. Jekot the first thing she did was to apologize for being late. In her words, "Some patients need a little extra love and attention and I'm so sorry that I am running behind. Now that I am here you have my full attention for as long as you need it." I've never had a doctor say that to me before. The best part was you could tell it was sincere.

She explained that to be safe she wanted to also perform a sonogram and then found something during that process. She ordered me back into the xray room for a few more views. I was thinking thank you, please be safe.... I don't mind the extra time and additional x-rays. Turned out not to be anything, and now I'm now I'm assured that I am good to go without any worries.

After the second set of x-rays Stacy showed me to a consult room. To my surprise Dr. Jekot was in there waiting for me just to see if I had any more questions and to follow up with her findings. Again, WOW. Never had that happen before either. I know that I always think of things to ask at the end of the appointment but at that point the dr. is long gone.

I encourage all my local female friends, clients, and random people who read this to visit her Center when the time comes. As you can tell I highly recommend it.

I'm turning Square!

Technology never ceases to amaze me. I just signed up for "Square". It's a little square, duh, card reader that plugs into your phone or ipad's headset and you can swipe your customer's credit cards. No monthly fee's, somewhat low rate lol, and accepts all cc's. Dang that is so cool. I used it for the first time tonight and it was a piece of cake. All you do is download the free app, request the free card reader, and verify your bank account. Tadaaa... you ready to go.

I sound like a commercial for them. I'm stating for the record I get no referral fees or discounts for my mention of their product. lol I only wanted to share because it's so cool. Now when I travel home to California I can take that with me and use it on the road.

So... For those merchants out there, will you be Square?

Meet Marisa at Red Door Dance Academy

I'm so excited to be working with Marisa Mailhes, owner of Red Door Dance Academy. I asked a couple of her students to come to the studio so I could photograph them for samples. Well, I noticed that Marisa didn't have a portrait of herself on her website and thought, why not photograph her too as long as I had her in the studio. I think it is extremely important to give your audience a chance to meet you, even if it's just via your image on your website.

She is adorable and I can't wait to get into her brand new studio in Wylie and photograph all of her students next month. Marisa was a child star appearing on the Barney and Friends Television Show. How cute is that?

She also trained at Cherrilane School of Dance in Dallas, Texas for 13 years in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical & hip hop. She went on to study dance at Texas A&M University where she graduated and later danced with the Armstrong Bergeron Dance Company.

Key Ring App

I'm one of "those" that has about 100 apps on my phone and ipad, ok I admit it, I only use about a dozen of them. But, that doesn't mean that they aren't good, and I have to have it just in case I might need them. Some good friends just told me about "Key Ring" and it's so cool I have to pass this one on to you.

In a nutshell, using your camera phone you scan the bar codes of your "frequent flyer" cards and it stores all your info in the app. You never have to carry all those cards again. You know what I mean, my Kroger's card, Sephora, etc., anything that requires a membership to get a discount or add points.

The app also has memberships that you may sign up for right on the spot. Like Mooyah Burgers. But, sign up for it at the restaurant and get two for one burgers, or in my case veggie burgers. It will also automatically add specials offered strictly through Key Ring. You just need to check it.

Honey Bee Collection!

I was very honored to be asked by Graphic Authority to lend my hand in their latest collection called, "Honey Bee" designed for children's photography. I was told that I could change whatever I wanted to the designs. At first, I thought, "Oh how I can't wait to get my hands on it", but then I saw the designs and thought they are great just the way they are. I changed about 1 % of the layout and colors. Their talented designer, Jameson, out did himself. Besides, I want to change it up after the "release" to blend with the images that I'm using to create my albums and cards.

It took me two full days going thru all of my images and designing the layout of the images into the templates. I wanted it to be perfect!

I love my clients!

I love my clients! I just got a call from one of my "regular" clients from Cali. The first thing she said was, "I talk to you all the time over the holidays when we are working on our portraits and I thought I would call and say hi because we haven't talked in a while." Can I just say, "I LOVE THAT!" I love developing a close bond with my clients and consider them friends.

Though several minutes later Holiday Portrait ideas were discussed. This is still April, right? lol (Just teasing you Kim!) She has a wonderful idea of her daughter in a victorian gown on a swing from a big ole tree. Anyone know of such a swing in the Bay Area? I'd love for you to share.

Me and my Mom

I must say I really enjoyed having my mom visit and was sad to take her to the airport yesterday. Loved the Greek food we cooked and just being able to hang out. Now it's back to reality. Back to Work. Back to doing my Taxes. Yuck!

These images were taken during our shopping trip to McKinney Square. Do you all call it McKinney Square or just downtown McKinney? lol Back home we have almost the same type set up in downtown Sonoma that we call Sonoma Square. You know, because it's in a square. ;)

Except there is a wonderful park with a pond and ducks. Wine tasting, shops with fresh locally made cheese and sourdough french bread, and beautiful views of the mountains. And of course great shopping too. Can you read the sarcasm in my words when I say it's the same? Yes, I miss Cali and all the wonderful things it has to over. So thanks mom from bringing a little home to Texas with you.

Though I can't deny Texas is unbeaten when it comes to the friendly, warm southern hospitality. Thanks for the love.

Mommy Time!

I have enjoyed having my mom in town. I've been playing a little hooky from work but really, my mom only visits every couple of years so I'm enjoying every minute with her. I've also put my income taxes on hold too. Boy oh boy, will I be busy when she leaves in a couple days.

This has been more of a relaxing trip than normal, which has been nice. We are now enjoying all of our left over Greek Food from our marathon cooking day on Friday. We started at 10 am and finished at 7 pm with no break. We made four dishes and one dessert. It just wouldn't be complete without Baklava! Though, the Baklava didn't last very long. That was gone in two days. lol

Today we went to the Dallas Arboretum. My mom is a Master Garden and loved every minute of it. It was really kinda cute to see her answering people's questions. If she lived here she would certainly be a volunteer.

Tomorrow the Dallas Market Center and hopefully a movie tomorrow night. Then who knows for Tuesday. I'm just enjoying spending time with her. So are the kids and hubby.

Ok, I admit it. No matter how old I am I still need my mommy. It has been so difficult with her still living in California and us moving to Texas. I miss her. Plain and simple. It is such a treat when she comes and visits. She made me french toast for breakfast yesterday. Come on, you gotta love that.

One of my the favorite things that we do when she visits is cook a ton of Greek food. Today is no exception. On the menu: Baklava, Spanakopeta (spinach pie), Dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves),Tirotrigona (cheese triangles) and Stifado (beef stew). The only thing missing is Pastitsio ( baked macaroni with a white/egg sauce) and my favorite cookies Paximathia (biscotti). Maybe later in the week we can make those.

It's quite ambitious, I hope we can get all the cooking done! We also have trips planned to the Fort Worth stockyard, the Dallas arboretum, the Market Center and a few movies too.

Oh yea, good times. :)

Red Door Dance Academy

I'm so very pleased to have been asked by Marisa Mailhes, owner/dancer of Red Door Dance Academy in Wylie, Tx to photograph all of her dancers. Seriously, who can resist a cute little girl in a tutu or a sweet little boy in tap shoes? I photographed a dance school when I lived in California for many years and I must admit I do miss it. I can't wait to get in there and get started.

I'm going to have so much more fun this time around, because now with the options of digital I can offer, note cards, bookmarks, stickers, jewelry, etc.

The big day is April 30th, but I'm taking a few sneak peak images middle of March and I can't wait to share the images. You know they will be appearing here. So, if you love tutu clad little princesses as much as I do, stay tuned.

Students range from 3 years old to teenagers. Marisa is a doll and the kids love her. How cute is she that she began her performance career early when she landed a job as an actress on the Barney and Friends television show. She danced and sang on the show for three years.

WPPI in Vegas!

I just got back from one of the largest conventions for photographers held in Las Vegas. WPPI = Wedding & Portrait Photographers International. What makes WPPI so fun is, well, it's in Vegas, duh, but more than that is the international mix of photographers. They pull photographers from Asia, Australia, France, UK, etc., and of course the good ole US of A. I love the accents and I love seeing the latest trends in style of photography all over the world.

I also love the camaraderie that photographers share and seeing friends from one year to the next. I tried to count how many WPPI Conventions I have attended and I think it's up to 10. It's important as a photographic artist to stay current with the latest trends, products and techniques. I strongly believe that if you are not attending at least a couple of conventions a year you are doing yourself and your clients a disservice. Let's face it, our industry is changing so fast and new, fun products are being introduced monthly. Did you know that you can now print an image on metal? lol

WPPI offers one of the biggest trade shows ever! This year they had 402 vendors showing their stuff! I know, I counted the booths from the floor plan. lol And, I worked one of those booths. It was great fun to meet so many wonderful people. Thanks for stopping by the G.A. booth. I have so much fun when people remember me from last year and stop by to see our latest products.

So, again, stay current in your field. You owe it to yourself and to your clients. Besides, it's great fun to educate yourself and to be in the know! :)

Life is Precious

It is with a sad and heavy heart that I write this post. Tonight we attended a memorial of one of my son's good friends, Stevie Kendall. He was only 18 and still a senior in high school. He lost his life in a car accident in the ice storms that Texas has been hit with recently. My son Conner's best friends were all in the car, it hit very close to home. These are all smart, good kids that we have known ever since we moved to Texas almost 7 years ago.

His memorial was standing room only with people out in the hallways because they could not fit inside the room. That is a testament to what a wonderful young man Stevie was. And I loved that they displayed so many wonderful pictures, his favorite stuffed animal, the theatrical masks for his love of the arts, an old fashion camera was also on the table for his love of photography. Someone drew this picture of him too that they had on display.

My heart and prayers goes out to Stevie and his family. Tonight at the memorial they stated that the last text Stevie sent to his mother while they were in the car was, "I Love, Love, Love You". Wow, that's powerful and his mom will never forget those words! . Always tell the people in your life how much you love them. Forgive misunderstandings. Spend more time with your loved ones. Enjoy your life.

His parents and friends got him. Understood him. Loved him. It was wonderful to see. Stevie taught us all tonight to love and he was loved my many.

God Speed Stevie Kendall you will be missed.

My neighbor and friend who is an author has appeared on a local Sacramento, Ca channel to promote her book. This is her first book, though she has three published now. (And her third book I designed the cover - Stilettos No More)

The interesting thing is they wanted her to appear as her character in the book, not as herself, the author.

How I Pack for a Trip

This might be a funny blog, but I get asked all the time because I travel frequently and thought I would pass along my tricks. I also saw that one of my FB friends posted to her status how she hates to pack. So Chanda, this is for you too. lol

1. I leave all my clothes on their hangers and just fold them over two and half times in my suitcase. This way I just grap the whole stack out and hang it up in the hotel closet. Besides, I can't use their hangers... I'm not 6'3" and their hangers would stretch my clothes and leave weird marks on the arms of my clothes. I also bring a few empty hangers for what I'm wearing. Plus, when I get home for the clothes that I didn't end up wearing I simply hang them back up.

2. Depending on how long my trip will be I only pack one color theme. Ie; All clothes and shoes in a brown tone or black tone. This way everything will blend and I am packing less clothes, shoes, belts and jewelry.

3. I always pack "flip flops", my yoga pants, and long and short sleeve tee shirts so I have something comfortable to wear. Plus if I need to run and go grab ice or something I can quickly throw those on. Also my gym clothes. Hotel gyms are pretty good these days.

4. I always have my toiletries in a to go travel bag so I just pick up the whole bag and throw it in my suitcase. I don't have to add anything to it or hunt stuff down. It unzips in the middle and has clear cases on each side which eliminates the need for me to put my stuff in baggies to go thru security. The TSA crew can plainly see all my liquids.

5 I'm an avid tea drinker so I always bring my travel mug with me plus my favorite tea bags. Or if you love coffee Starbucks Via's are fabulous. They are instant coffee if your not in the know. Usually the rooms will have either a microwave or a coffee pot for hot water. Unless your in Vegas and you get Nothing. But, that's a whole different blog.

6. I usually don't finish my meals and always have leftovers, and restaurants don't package up your food very well so I bring Ziploc baggies. I throw my food at the bottom of the ice bucket and then also but ice in another baggie and it's usually good until the next morning. I love dinner food for breakfast and breakfast food for dinner! Though, I'm a vegetarian and I'm not trying to keep meat fresh, so rethink that if you are a carnivore. lol

7. I bring a collapsable tote bag to carry all the extra stuff you end up with on the way home. You know you always come home with more stuff than you left with. Shootsac at the trade shows makes a great one (for my fellow photog's). It zips up nice and small, but is very big and roomy when you unzip it.

8. If you forget something when you leave the hotel, forget it, it's gone forever! I have even called the hotel a hour later and the standard response is, "We couldn't find it, Ma". I think it's some sort of hotel code thing between housekeeping and the front desk. I guess I'm a little forgetful and have lost several items to the "pool" of the hotel staff.

And you know that I am. lol I was telling my husband that I was going to blog about Superbowl Sunday and he suggested how funny it would be to add pictures of me cheering on the field from the 49er games when I was in high school. I agreed. This is hilarious.

The 49ers would invite the local high school cheerleaders to come and cheer on the field and luckily they invited us regularly. That and all three of my brothers playing football cinched it for me. Every since my love for the game continues to grown. Plus my parents being huge fans and watching the games on TV with them since I was a wee little thing.

How brave was I to just go sit on the bench with Randy Cross and have our photo taken? Actually, I don't think I'm that brave any more. Or perhaps I was just naive. lol I do remember the coach yelling at him afterwards to keep his head in the game. Sorry Randy.

And how lucky am I to continue to be invited on the field by my very good friend Terrell Lloyd. But now I am fortunate to photograph the games instead of cheering. I just had to share some of my images from the field. It is so much fun. Can you say, "Could it be any Funner?" In my best Chandler voice.

Wish I was on the field today photographing the Superbowl. The only thing better would be if the Niners were playing in it. A gal can dream can't she?

I am so disappointed in the weather as I know of many fans here in Dallas are. (Really, this is unusual weather for us. We don't get snow and freezing temps very often.) Though you can still feel the excitement in the air hosting the Superbowl here in Dallas. Ok technically Arlington. Lot's of news coverage, the "NFL Experience" at the Dallas Convention Center, and the ESPN Set in Fort Worth to name just a few.

I hope Jerry wins the bid for 2016 to host the Superbowl again. And pray that the weather is a sunny 65 degrees.

Baby it's Cold Outside!

Oh man oh man! I'm not used to this weather. Many northern states and yes, Texas is experiencing extreme ice storms and a cold front right now. Ok, I expect that if I live in Greenbay, Wisconsin - ok, I had to put in a mention for the Packers, lol - but not in a Gulf State.

Are we just wussies in the warmer states and the cooler states are tougher? Maybe, they are a lot MORE prepared for this cold front than we are. I'm wondering... Do you stay home and are afraid to drive on the roads or do you all have four wheel drive vehicles and own a snow plow?

I admit it I'm a wuse. I like my sun and warmth. I know I've been in Texas for almost 7 years now but deep down I will always be a California Girl. Give me the beach and the sun any day. And when I want the snow I drive to it, to beautiful Lake Tahoe.

Well, staring out the window checking out the snow and streets today I saw our chair out on our front porch with the frozen ice and couldn't resist capturing this image. I know it's only with my iphone but you know the saying, "the best camera is the one you have with you" and the quickest one where you can be in and out of the cold in 5 seconds!

Just got back yesterday from SYNC (Senior and Youth National Convention) that was held in St. Petersburg, Florida. I attend A LOT of conventions for two reasons: You can never stop learning no matter how many years you have been in the business and I love to socialize and network with other photographers. Sometimes you learn more at dinner than in class. lol

I must say this convention is one of my favorites. I love that the first class started at 9 am! No, I am not a morning person. Usually they start at 7 am. That's just crazy. I loved the long lunch break to enjoy the beach and take a walk along the ocean line. The smaller crowd was nice too. About 450 attendees compared to 10,000-16,000 students.

This was the first time in 15 years that I felt like it was also a vacation because of the slower pace and right on the beach. Boy, did I enjoy that. Usually, you are running from 6:30 am to 11:00 pm with only an hour break for lunch and dinner. I need a vacation when I come home! lol

How can you beat these beautiful sunsets every night too. Nope, this isn't Hawaii! lol Beautiful Florida with white sand beaches. Really, 70 degrees on the beach in JANUARY? I want to move.

So, for the photographers that read my blog... GO TO SYNC next year. And, if your not a photographer find a reason to connect with others in your field and enjoy the camaraderie amongst your peers.

Mystery Diagnosis - Michael Iniguez

My good friends, Stuart and Sherrill Iniguez and their son Michael were featured on Mystery Diagnosis last night on the Oprah Winfrey Network. We first met when we both enrolled our kids in preschool, they are 20 now so we've known them for a long time. At one point we both lived in Petaluma and frequently socialized together. I miss them very much living in Texas now.

I remember emailing back and forth while her son was recuperating and her telling me the events of her son's illness and how he almost died. But to see their story on tv was so surreal and it just hit home so much more. I was crying thru the segment and wished I was home in Petaluma to have been able to offer my love and support.

I want to take this opportunity to educate people on Lemierre's Syndrome. This is the disease that Michael had and took a specialist to diagnosis it. And thank God he did, otherwise he would have died in the next several days.

It's a blood clot in the neck caused by bacteria and it slowly loosens up and runs through your entire bloodstream. First symptom is a sore throat, followed by fever, ammonia and then organ failure and you become septic. It's very rare and why several doctors could not diagnosis him.

I have some of the most talented, amazing clients and I just love to share stories about them. I first met Kim Hoegger two years ago when she was referred to me to photograph her oldest son's senior portraits. We hit it off immediately and I have since photographed her daughter's senior portraits, their family portraits and executive head shots for her husband's company. We have worked quite a bit together and it's always a joy and a pleasure.

When the whole family came into my studio last year I was immediately in awe of how much their family laughed, joked, and loved each other. And we are talking Teenagers! They were a joy to photograph and I wanted to bottled up her motherhood skills! Doesn't this family look like it that truly cares and loves each other?

She recently has taken on a new adventure by opening up a wonderful home store in downtown Rockwall. What makes her store unique is that it's an all in one kind of place to shop. She still continues to work as an Interior Designer if you have a room that needs a face lift.

I was one lucky girl to have just spent the last 4 days in beautiful San Antonio where I attended the Professional Photographer's Association Annual Convention. Every year I look forward to attending classes, working the trade show, and I always have fun.

I've been attending conventions for over 15 years and I truly believe you should never stop learning. If I just pick up one great tip/lesson per class I'm a happy camper. But, I have a confession: the best part of the convention is networking and meeting other photographers. As a whole we have a wonderful profession. We are generous in sharing our knowledge and genuinely enjoy connecting and I have a blast. I must say, some of my best friends are photographers.

What other profession willingly and joyfully mentors and teaches your competition? Why do you think they aren't very many magicians? lol So... A big huge thank you to all of those that have shared and have mentored me over the years and now I enjoy mentor others. I can't take without giving back! Thank you Jon Allyn, Robert Pierce and Marilyn Garry Mulkeen. Love you.

I also love working with Graphic Authority at the trade show. I must have talked to over 100 photographers and some of those that I have meet at the booth are now my friends.

Right Brain / Left Brain

Last night I attended the local Dallas Professional Photographer's Meeting and the topic was on print competition. The very talented and entertaining speaker was Larry Lourcey. He talked about coming up with original ideas and how important it is to be creative. And that some people enter images that are not creative or have impact and their prints will not score well in competition. That some people should just not be photographers. I thought to myself, how lucky I am because I consider myself a very creative person. I would be crushed if I was told that I'm not cutting it as a professional photographer.

This made me start thinking about what it is that makes some people creative and others not. It's that whole Right Brain/Left Brain theory that came to mind. So I did a little research this morning and yep... I'm very much Right Brained. Of course, a little "Left" is in there too. My whole family talked about the characteristics of each personality type. We decided that my husband and daughter are Left Brained while my son and I are Right Brained. We had a good laugh over, "OMG mom is that why you are such a spaz?"

It's so much fun setting up all the decoration with the spirit and excitement the upcoming holiday Season brings, I love this time of year starting in the fall with the temperature finally cooling down from those hot Texas summers, the changing of the leaves, and the approach of the blessed Holiday Season and the start of the New Year. .

Well what goes up must come down, this past weekend my family did the yearly ritual of taking down the Christmas Tree, the wreaths hanging on all the doors, the garland on the staircase, the Manger set, and rereading all the wonderful Christmas cards and pulling a side the picture Christmas Cards which I keep every year. But more significantly to me the taking down of the Christmas decorations always get me to start reflecting on the start of the New Year, NFL Playoffs/Superbowl and upcoming Photography Conventions and Trade Shows.

Another favorite time of the year for me... if you follow my blog you know how much I love football and baseball... I love the playoffs, and I look forward to all the big Photography Conventions. They all happen within the first few months of the year. I love seeing what is current, the new options to offer my clients, and participating in all of the excitement.

As photographers I think it is extremely important to stay current and to see all of our options available at the trade shows. This weekend I leave for San Antonio for PPA's biggest convention. (Professional Photographers of America which I have been a member of since 1989!) It's non stop networking, trade show and classes.

I can't wait to see what I come home with. Stay tuned. lol

Graphic Authority Commercial

I was thrilled when Graphic Authority asked me to participate in their commercial. Landon Day and Deborah Winnett were in the commercial with me and they did an awesome job. We had a lot of fun working on this project.

I could never endorse a product I didn't believe in or love using so I was very happy to lend my name to Graphic Authority's products. With the start of 2011 you can't help but look back on 2010. I hate to say it but I'm happy to see 2010 go and I'm really looking forward to 2011. The old saying "If you don't have your health you don't have anything", is so true. I never really thought about that saying because I have always been healthy. Well, I was very sick for about 6 month and I thought I was tough. I've learned that I'm not! Luckily, I'm back on my feet and ready to live life again.

I want to thank my regular clients for hanging in there with me, sending me flowers, the phone calls, and writing notes. You guys are the best and are the reason I love what I do. When you are appreciated for your time and talent it makes all the difference and makes me what to work even harder for my fabulous clients.

I have a lot of great clients, but in this post I want to give a shout out to John, Debbie, Carrisa and Katrina! I feel a strong connection to this family and have absolutely loved watching the girls grow up. They are my longest running clients at around 20 years. I have photographed their wedding, her sister's wedding, both pregnancies, and the children and/or family every year for the last 17 years. This spring will be 18 years with Carrisa's High School Senior Portraits!

They both could be professional models. They are beautiful on the inside and out and know how to pose! It's always a joy to photograph them. The biggest challenge is coming up with new ideas and locations every year.

My Favorite Session in 2010!

I thought it would be appropriate to post my favorite session from 2010 on the last day of the year! Ok, I'm a little biased because this is of my daughter, Cate, and her friend Jocelyn. She is my MOST favorite subject to photograph. Perhaps because the poor thing had a camera shoved in her face from the moment she was born is why she is such a wonderful model.

I had this idea in my head to photograph with Mardi Gras Masks every since I visited New Orleans over two years ago. I was very excited that I finally made the time to photograph just for me. I couldn't have done it without Amber Lynne's talented Make Up Artistry and Hair Styling Skills. Thank you to Amber, Cate and Jocelyn!

Happy New Year! May 2011 be better than 2010, 2009, 2008, etc. lol

The See's Candy thief!

First, I have to start with a background story about See's Candy... Sorry it's a little long but I think worth the read and hopefully a chuckle!

Easter is a big deal to us Greeks and every year my Auntie Anna and Uncle Mike would have a HUGE Easter party at their house. This began for as long as I can remember. My dad would leave the house early to help out with the preparations. Mainly, skewing two lambs on an open pit in their background. (yes, this is why I am a vegetarian!) Later, my brothers would go in my dad's place to help out.

They would host anywhere from 40-75 people over for dinner and Greek dancing. One of my fondest memories as a kid and even into adulthood. Someone would always bring them a big box of See's Candy for hosting the party and the Sarganis Clan, though never my dad and my mom was the instigator, would hunt down this famous box. My mom would carefully unwrap the box and one of us would stand guard. Each one of us would take a piece, rearrange it and remove the empty wrappers. Then my mom would carefully wrap it back up.

We did this for YEARS! We all thought we were so clever and funny. We did this in good spirits. My mom did confess to Auntie Anna years later, I'll have to ask my mom what her response was.

I've have told our kids this story and they think it's funny too. Though, some in our family don't see the humor in it. But that's another story.

Skip to Christmas 2010. My Auntie Cyrse sent us a big box of See's Candy for the holidays. My daughter Cate got the mail and snuck the box up to her room and did exactly what we had done for years to my Auntie Anna. Though, she wasn't as sneaky and stuck in an IOU note in the box and didn't remove the empty wrappers.

I laughed so hard when I opened up the box for Christmas Morning. Mind you, I didn't know that it had ever arrived. I told both my mom and Auntie Cryse what Cate had done and they both laughed as well.

So, if you have a box of Candy around the Sarganis Clan just know that you have been forewarned!

Now we have done this for years too. Take a bite and if we don't like it put the half eaten piece back in box. I mean why throw away a half of a piece if someone else in the family might like it? lol

We had a blast putting this together. It wouldn't be complete without our two dogs either! I admit we tried and tired to get an image with the dogs wearing the hats and Little Bear wearing a wig. One out of two isn't bad. Joey's worked but we gave up and I put the hat on Little Bear in Photoshop. Don't tell.

The Giants winning the World Series was a highlight for me in 2010. Go Giants!

It's finally here! Doesn't it seem like we prepare for Christmas for months? The shopping, baking, decorating, and enjoying the good will that is all around us this time of year. I wish the good will and charitable feelings that we all have lasted all year long!

I bought these cool long pink eyelashes and black with red polka dot eyelashes about 2 years ago knowing that one day I would have the perfect opportunity to use them in a session! Well, that day finally arrived, and frankly, I'm amazed that I knew exactly where they were. lol

We hired the fabulously talented make up artist/hair stylist, Amber Lynne. We could not have done it without her. She rocks. This is my second time hiring Amber for a session and won't be my last.

I invited my two mentoree's (is that a word?) to visit my studio and to have a fun girls day of shooting. It was wonderful to photograph for fun! I need to do that more often.

I invite everyone to photograph (or whatever it is that you do) for fun. Let the creativity flow, relax and enjoy your work again. Especially with the Christmas rush where I have been working until 1 am almost every night, it was relaxing to not have a deadline or pressure to work under.

Here is another one of my favorite Christmas Cards from this year, and one of their favorites too. I have been photographing these girls since they were in the womb! lol

I photographed both the mom's pregnancies and then twice a year until they were about 10. Now we photograph the girls every fall without fail. I feel like I have grown up with these girls and they hold a special place in my heart.

I have the best lab, Love you Miller's. They come up with new products every year. Well, this year they offer these great die cut cards. And, I'm fortunate to say they are one of my sponsors. Thank you Millers!

May I state for the official record........I love designing Christmas Cards. I look forward to it every year and in fact I state thinking up ideas for Christmas Cards in July! And, my clients do too. I will run into a client at the grocery store in July and they will ask me, "So what are we doing for our cards this year?" I even have one client, yes Kim I'm talking about you, that will call me up in August and want to start talking about ideas with me. I love it. Thanks Kim.

Well, this family is their third Christmas Card with me and I think both of our favorite one. I saw an advertisement for a Frosty The Snowman dvd and it hit me... A snowman for them would be perfect. We were rushed during this season because of a work conflict and we only took about 3 shots of the snowman. Thank Goodness it work!

Thinking about giving a pet for a Christmas Present???

My boys!

If you are thinking about giving a pet for a Christmas Present I highly recommend, strongly encourage, wholeheartedly suggest, ok, you get the picture to look into your local animal shelter. These are lost pets or pets that the owners are simply not able to care for anymore for one reason or another.

They are well taken care of, seen by a veterinarian, and are waiting for a good home. Unfortunately, the shelters can only care for so many animals at one time so if they are not adopted they are, as you know, euthanized. It breaks my heart to hear of any animal being put down.

We have gotten all of our pets at animal shelters and have had 100% positive experience. The shepherd mix shown above we adopted when he was about 4 months old. We named him "Joey" after my husband's childhood dog. He is the best and I love him like he is my child. Though, I think he adopted us at the shelter. We had an instant bond.

The adorable corgi mix we named "Little Bear". My daughter found him on the side of the road in the country. He was around 4 weeks old. I can't believe someone could be so cruel to dump him in the middle of no where. When she brought him home he drank water for 30 minutes straight. He has turned out to be another great pet that I couldn't imagine not having in our home and being part of our family.

(The animal shelters only charge $15-$25 to drop off a pet)

We have also adopted several kittens/cats from the local shelter and couldn't be happier. Did you know some shelters also have bunnies, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds, etc.

Here is a great website that many local animal shelters use to register their animals waiting to be adopted. It has one site with thousands of pets listed. Simple put in your zip code and your criteria.

Stilettos No More

Twin Soccer Kings

The Twin Soccer Kings - ok, that's not their names, just the names I came up with for them... Their real names are Estaban and Manuel. They were in my studio and I couldn't resist jumping in and photographing them. They were great models as well as great role models. They teach kids soccer along with their dad and have a great time doing it. Their positive and vivacious attitudes are infectious. What a great, fun family. If only more young adults could get other kids off of Xbox and outside playing sports and exercising we would have a lot more happy, healthy kids!

My Daughter is a Thespian!

It was with such joy to watch my daughter and her friends in a play called, "Our Country's Good". It was about how the UK shipped all their criminals to Australia. The production was assembled strictly by the students and I know how hard they worked. My daughter, Cate, wasn't home for over a month straight. lol They handled the lights, set design, props, wrangling, etc.

Cate is wearing a fat suit with a big scar on her face! It was great! She's the one in the brown dress with the scarf. She had such a great time she has tried out for the next play and received a part. In fact, she has caught the acting bug and wants to move to LA. I'm so excited for the Giants, the Bay Area, and all us Giant Fans!!!!

Wow, it was such a joy to watch the playoffs and, of course, the WORLD SERIES.

They kept the Rangers struggling for the runs the entire series, hit like crazy, and made those defensive plays. I am so proud of our misfits.

I especially loved our home games. The Giant fans are the best! Such energy and a great sense of humor. I wish I was there. I would come in a beard! lol Fear the beard.

My mom told me that she wanted to see the SF Giants win in her lifetime! Well, mom, here's to you. You made me a Giants and a 49er fan. Thank you!

Our Neighbors Jodi and Gary have a huge halloween party every year. In fact this might be their 29th or 30th year in a row.

They hire a band, catered food, award trophy's for best costumes (no pressure), karaoke, and this year, ELVIS was in the house!

That's Jodi and Gary as Elvira and the Joker. I was Queen of Hearts and my hubby was King of Farts. (fart machine and all. lol)

Ha ha, the title sounds like we had Alien's come to visit. Nope, just my best friend since the fifth grade and my husband's friend since college days. The funny part is they hooked up on their own and when they told us that they were dating each other we all just laughed at the coincidence. I was maid of honor and Russ was best man at their wedding.

Well, we moved to Texas six years ago and we finally got James and Suzanne to come visit. We went to the Arboretum, Kimball Museum, and of course the Fort Worth Stock Yards. When they got to the stockyards they asked us if it was for real or like Disneyland or Knotts Berry Farm? We laughed and told them it was for real.

Love the irony of Harley's parked outside the saloon!

Had a wonderful time and can't wait for them to come visit again.

Love you guys. (That's what we say in Cali, in Texas we would say, Love you all! lol)
